Combined Concert with Mounts Bay Singers at FSMC
On Tuesday 8th April a joint concert took place at Fore Street Methodist Church, St. Ives with proceeds raised from the evening going to St Julia's Hospice, Hayle. The joint concert for the programme contained songs from The Mounts Bay Singers, and ourselves.
The programme was hosted by Geraint Richards MVO, The High Sheriff of Cornwall, who did a sterling job with his introductions for each part. The first part started with The Mounts Bay Singers singing three sacred songs, the hauntingly beautiful Ave Verum Corpus, O breath of Life and Crossing the Bar.
Our first songs were, I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing, and then a medley of songs from My Fair Lady. This was great fun and included solos from Alan, Mike, Lynne and Tracy.
The mid section of the programme started off with three songs of water by The Mounts Bay Singers. These included The Water of Tyne, Lovely on the Water and Sweet and Low. Then it was our turn again, and not to be outdone with the water theme, we performed Riversong and then one of our favourites, the gospel type song Get on Board followed by Carrickfergus.
Time by now was ticking by and before we realised it, it was time for the final section of the programme. The Mounts Bay Singers treated us to three songs for fun, all toe tapping tunes including Over the Hills and Faraway, Down by the Riverside and Quick, We have but a Second!
Lois, their musical director, their accompanist Bridgit, and the choir were rewarded by a very warm round of applause. And very well deserved.
Our final section of the programme contained Dry Bones, Forever Country (a country music song including a couple of well-known songs with a twist) and ended with the emotional This is my home. Judging by the warm round of applause at the end, it seemed the audience enjoyed our performance too, with William and Alison deserving of such applause after all their hard work.
The evening came to a close with William and Vicky, our Chairperson, expressing their thanks to all who attended and with the distribution of gifts to those who had put such an effort in towards the evening. Lisa, representing St Julia's Hospice, gave a little explanation regarding the truly wonderful work the Hospice provides.
The High Sheriff of Cornwall was thanked for his excellent compèring. Trelawny was then sung. Given his links to royalty, we ended the evening by singing God save the King.
The audience were invited to donate to the Hospice on departing.
Everyone was then invited back to the Sunday school building where refreshments were served.
The final total raised after extra donations came in amounted to £580 which was topped up to £600 from choir funds.

Hayle Day Care Centre informal concert
Monday 7th April started off the choir's busy Spring schedule with a performance at Hayle Day Care Centre. The centre provides vital social support for local people who might need some company, activities participation and meals. There was a full house in attendance, all of whom seemed to enjoy the singing judging by the amount of audience joining-in and even some country music dancing!
Twenty members of the choir, who were able to make this performance, took part and we started off by singing I'd like to teach the world to sing, one of the newer songs we have been rehearsing. This was followed by a Cornish favourite, The White Rose.
Next up was Yesterday, an old Beatles classic, in which Alan, our webmaster, started the song with a solo performance, and this was then followed by another new song we have been rehearsing, called Forever Country. It was the perfect place to give a sneak preview of this song which includes a combination of a couple of well-known country tunes.
The programme then contained some favourite Cornish songs with Proper Job going down well with Steve providing a solo part along with his seagull and pasty! This was followed by Cornwall my Home and then
Camborne Hill.
The performance was finished with us singing a couple of melodies from the show, My Fair Lady, with Alan once again singing solo on one part, and Tracy on another.
The choir really enjoyed their morning at the centre. The lovely sunshine shining through the windows, in front of the beautiful scenic estuary in the background, was a perfect start to our Spring/Summer programme. We would like to thank the staff and all those in attendance for their warmth and hospitality.

Cheque Presentation
Our first notable event of the year came when the choir presented a cheque for £510.00 to St Julia's Hospice at our practice on Tuesday 11th February. The gift was raised from a raffle at the choir's social in December, followed by a further raffle and donations at the choir's end of year concert held at Carbis Bay Memorial Hall. In total the choir raised £3367.00 last year for local charities. The cheque was presented to Holly McGroary, West Community Fundraiser for Cornwall Hospice Care.
